North Hudson Flag Day ceremony to return this year

The event is being held again after a hiatus due to COVID-19

The North Hudson Flag Day ceremony is back after a short hiatus due to the pandemic. It will return in 2022 at a brand new location.

The ceremony will take place this year on June 14 in Braddock Park, in the field near the James J. Braddock statue. As always, there will be a salute to veterans followed by the ceremonial burning of retired U.S. flags.

There will be no parade. The event will start at 4:30 p.m. with the Police Department Honor Guard and salute to the flag followed by the singing of the National Anthem.

Residents with damaged or unserviceable American flags that they would like to retire can bring them during business hours to North Bergen Town Hall at 4233 Kennedy Boulevard, the uptown library at 8411 Bergenline Avenue, or the Kennedy Branch library at 2123 Kennedy Blvd.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation in 1916 that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. On August 3, 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

The United States Army also celebrates its birthday on this date. The U.S. Army was founded on June 14, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized enlistment of riflemen to serve the United Colonies for one year.

The Braddock Park Flag Day event is sponsored jointly by the municipalities of North Bergen, Guttenberg, and West New York.
