Restraining order limiting protests outside Hudson County Executive’s house dismissed

A Hudson County Superior Court judge dismissed a restraining order on Friday that limited protests outside of Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise’s house.

The American Civil Liberties Union’s New Jersey branch represented the defendants in the case, arguing that the restraints undermined First Amendment rights. It had stemmed over protests outside of DeGise’s house in Dec. 2020 over the county’s controversial ICE contracts.

Flo Rida to headline Jersey City’s Fourth of July celebration

Jersey City has announced that rapper Flo Rida will headline the city’s Fourth of July celebration. Shaquille O’Neal aka DJ Diesel and Funk Flex will also DJ their own sets before Flo Rida takes the stage.

The celebration will also feature fireworks by Fireworks by Grucci, which can be watched along the Hudson River Walkway, from the north field at Liberty State Park, and most overlook areas in the Heights. For more information on the event, visit www.jcnj.org.

New Jersey Blood Services to host Hudson County blood drives

New Jersey Blood Services has announced a series of blood drives in Hudson County that are open to the public next month.

The following drives are:

  • July 8: Newport Centre Mall ‑ Sears Wing, 30 Mall Drive West, Jersey City 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • July 21: Senior Community Center at Story Court, 16 West 4th St, Bayonne 12:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
  • July 22: Newport Centre Mall ‑ Sears Wing, 30 Mall Drive West, Jersey City 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • July 26: Immaculate Conception Church, 780 Post Place, Secaucus 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • July 26: American Legion Post 99, 314 Belgrove Dr., Kearny 3:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Hoboken Charter School teacher Christopher Kunkel receives Golden Egg award

Hoboken Charter School teacher Christopher Kunkel, who has taught math and robotics for 16 years, received the Golden Egg Award in recognition of his volunteer work with the FIRST Tech Challenge New Jersey (FTCNJ) on March 6.

FTCNJ is a non-profit organization that holds state level robotics events and league competitions for students. Kunkel leads two FTCNJ teams that participated in FTCNJ’s 2021/2022 season and the New Jersey State Championship.

West New York Farmers Market returns

Mayor Gabriel Rodriguez, Commissioner Margarita Guzman, and the Board of Commissioners announced the annual West New York Farmers Market opened on Friday, June 10 and will run through October 28, operating every Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. The weekly market is located at Donnelly Park, at the corner of 60th St & Boulevard East.

“We are excited to partner with local businesses and the North Jersey Chamber of Commerce to bring our residents access to healthy, locally sourced, and affordable food,” said Mayor Gabriel Rodriguez. “The Farmer’s Market provides the residents of West New York the opportunity to support local fresh food vendors, the local economy, and engage with members of the community in a safe outdoor setting.”

The Town of West New York partnered with the North Jersey Chamber of Commerce, Hoboken Farms, Alstede Farms, and Pickles Olives Etc. to increase access to fresh, local produce for West New York Residents and the surrounding communities. Ten Parking spots have been reserved for Farmers Market Shoppers in front of Donnelly Park, at the corner of 60th and Boulevard East. North Bergen celebrates Pride

Mayor Nicholas Sacco was joined by Commissioners Hugo Cabrera, Frank Gargiulo, and Julio Marenco, Township Administrator Janet Castro, and Police Chief Peter Fasilis, other members of the administration, police officers and more employees in raising the Pride flag over North Bergen Town Hall on Friday afternoon, June 10.

One day earlier, the Police Department hosted a relaxing Pride Cookout and Meet & Greet in Braddock Park. Local residents from the township and neighboring municipalities kicked back with grilled burgers and dogs, a variety of sandwiches and sides from Wawa, and music from a DJ. Police Officer Jen Fernandez, the NBPD’s LGBTQ+ liaison, hosted the enjoyable event.

Drug bust in Secaucus

After an investigation by multiple North Hudson departments, police have arrested two local men in connection with selling methamphetamine at Secaucus hotels. Richard Rivera, a 36-year-old of North Bergen, and 45-year-old Christopher Healey of North Bergen, are charged in relation to the drug crimes.
