Jersey City considers acquiring ferry terminal
As part of an ongoing effort to improve access to affordable transportation options in Jersey City, officials may consider acquiring Port Liberte Ferry Terminal. In a press release, Mayor Steven Fulop and Councilwoman Denise Ridley announced plans to introduce an ordinance at the June 15 city council meeting that would allow the city to enter talks to buy the terminal.
Former Fulop insider heading to trial
The on again, off again federal court case of Tom Bertoli, former advisor to Mayor Steven Fulop, is now headed to trial. Bertoli, who advised Fulop in his runs for city council and mayor, was indicted for tax evasion in June 2020. The eight-count indictment alleges Bertoli failed to file income tax returns, concealed income by using check cashing services, used a business account for personal expenses, and gave false statements to the IRS.

North Bergen boxing club continues streak
State of Fitness Boxing Club again won the Top Team trophy on Friday, May 27, after winning two out of two bouts at Aces Boxing Club in Boonton. Josh Vivar, a 15-year-old from North Bergen, earned a hard-fought victory over the 16-year-old Ahmed Ouedraogo in a 132-pound bout. Meanwhile, Yadir Ibarguen, a 27-year-old from Paterson, won his first bout with a disqualification over 25-year-old Ziad Amer in a 156-pound bout. Both train out of State of Fitness at 508 73rd Street in North Bergen.

Man killed in WNY shooting with police identified
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has identified the dead man in a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred the evening of Friday, June 3 in West New York. The AG’s Office, which is conducting the investigation, has identified the man killed by police as 32-year-old Kevin Colindres of West New York.
North Bergen students accepted to Ivy League schools
Four North Bergen High School students have been accepted to Ivy League schools, Mayor Nicholas Sacco has announced. The students include: Minna Abdella and Denish Patel to Princeton University, Kelly Cho to the University of Pennsylvania, and Jose Matos to Dartmouth University.

Vaineiri elected chairman of the HCDO
Chairman of the Hudson County Board of Commissioners Anthony Vaineiri has been elected as the new chairman of the Hudson County Democratic Organization after a vote of the county’s 900 elected committee members. Vainieri succeeds Jersey City Councilwoman Amy DeGise and will be joined by a slate of Executive Board members that includes Vice Chair Barbara Stamato of Jersey City, Recording Secretary and Mayor Gabriel Rodriguez of West New York, Corresponding Secretary and Mayor Al Santos of Kearny, Treasurer Craig Guy of Jersey City and Sergeant at-Arms Margarita Gutierrez of Union City.
