Weehawken eyes tax abatement for new condos next to Daniel Webster School

The council also adopted a number of other measures

Weehawken is considering a 5-year tax abatement for property at 2716 Palisade Avenue. Mayor Richard Turner and the Weehawken Township Council voted unanimously to introduce an ordinance that would do so at its June 8 meeting.

Turner described the crux of the ordinance at the meeting, which was to support the construction of a new residential building next to Daniel Webster School now known as The Maple. The four-story elevator building is home to nine luxury condos with two parking spaces each in the ground floor garage.

“This is something we don’t normally do,” Turner said. “There was a very dangerous building next to Webster School. It was sold, demolished, and rebuilt. And we encouraged it to be rebuilt because the building was very dangerous next to the school yard.”

The council will hold a public hearing and final vote on the ordinance at its next meeting. That may be on June 23 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 400 Park Avenue.

The meetings take place in-person in the second floor council chambers and are streamed online. For more information, go to weehawken-nj.us.

Other measures advanced

Weehawken also moved to acquire some property. Turner did not disclose where due to ongoing legal battles.

“The township acquired some property,” Turner said. “Since there is litigation, we’re just going to do the authorization at the next meeting. We will discuss it more in detail.”

Another resolution approved the hiring of Anderson Kill, P.C for speciality insurance coverage.

“This is to handle some of our old claim lawsuits,” Turner said. “We need specialists to go through our insurance coverage over the years.”

The council also passed a resolution hiring Steven S. Simring M.D as a psychiatrist.

“This is a psychiatrist for one of the cases we had, which obviously is a personal matter,” Turner said. “We will not disclose the case. But we will hire the psychiatrist.”

The council voted unanimously to approve the resolutions.
