The annual NJ Golden Gloves State Finals will be held at the North Bergen Recreation Center, the township has announced.
The finals will take place on Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25. The Golden Gloves, a state and national amateur boxing tournament, has been running since the 1930s and produces boxers to compete on a national and Olympic level.
After a meeting between NJ Golden Gloves President Dan Doyle, World Champion Danny McDermott, Mayor Nicholas Sacco, and Commissioner Hugo Cabrera, the NJ Golden Gloves found a home for their state finals in North Bergen.
McDermott was the first boxer from North Bergen to win a world title since James J. Braddock in 1935. He is also the head coach of the North Bergen Recreation Boxing program, which trains at his gym in the township known as Little Mac Boxing Club.
Local novice boxers face off
The recently formed boxing team is one of several teams to compete in this year’s Golden Gloves tournament. The North Bergen-based team was incepted back in May in conjunction with the township’s Recreation Department.
Team captain and 112-pound finalist Jacob Perez, 26, is in the weekend finals event. After last weekend’s victory, junior Olympian and 139-pound boxer Gabriel Sauceda, 16, will be competing in the finals as well.
Additionally, Carlos Takaesu, a 27-year-old former 2018 finalist will also be boxing in the semifinals this weekend. Takaesu has won two bouts in the 139-pound novice weight class thus far.
Meanwhile, another boxing club from North Bergen also has a fighter in the finals. State of Fitness’s 20-year-old Gianmarco Marin punched his way to the 156-pound novice in the upcoming finals. The gym is owned by Desmond Boyle, who is also a coach and a senior firefighter at the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue.
General admission is $25, ringside seating is $30, and tickets are available at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m and the first bout starts at 7:30 p.m.
The event will be held at the North Bergen Recreation Center located at 6300 Meadowview Ave. For more information, go to njgoldengloves.com.
