West New York proposes changes to requirements for special police officers

The residency requirements would be removed, among other adjustments

West New York has moved to amend the requirements for special police officers.

Mayor Gabriel Rodriguez and the West New York Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to introduce an ordinance doing so at its June 22 meeting.

Previously, the West New York Police Department established the positions of Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers after a town ordinance in 2010. This newly proposed ordinance would amend the more than a decade old ordinance in a number of ways.

When it comes to the creation of the position, that section would be repealed and replace with language that caps the number of the positions at 10. The ordinance also lays out salaries for the position in another section to replace the current one.

“The salary amount for Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers shall be $22 per hour while they attend academy training,” the ordinance states. “The salary range for Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers upon graduation from the academy shall be $25 to $28.”

The section on residency requirements would repealed entirely. Read the ordinance at: westnewyorknj.org/_Content/pdf/ordinances/Ord1422-Amending-Chapter-80-of-the-Code-Police-Department.pdf.

A public hearing on the ordinance will be held on July 13, at 12:30 p.m. either remotely and or in person. For instructions regarding attendance and participation in the meeting, go to the town’s website: westnewyorknj.org.
