West New York woman dies in fatal crash
The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the North Bergen Police Department are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Sunday, June 26, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez. The front seat passenger, later identified as Yajira Valenzuela, a 36-year-old of West New York, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Braddock Park Farmers Market returns for 2022
Mayor Nicholas Sacco was on hand to launch the grand opening of the weekly Braddock Park Farmers Market on Thursday, June 23. The market will return every Thursday night from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial near the north entrance of Braddock Park at 90th Street and Bergenline Avenue.

Jersey City announces two new fire companies
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop joined Public Safety Director James Shea and Fire Chief Steven McGill to announce two new fire companies and officially launch a newly created specialized response team, the JCFD High-rise Unit, to respond to high-rise fires and all working fires as a Rapid Intervention Crew.
Secaucus police bust repeat car thief from Jersey City
Secaucus police have arrested a Jersey City man for a number of car thefts and burglaries. According to police, on June 23 at 2:34 a.m. a resident of Luhmann Terrace called and reported that he observed several individuals attempting to burglarize vehicles. Upon the arrival of Sergeant Stephen Hurtuk, he observed three individuals flee the area on foot, pursued the trio, and was able to place Tyhaze Williams, a 23-year-old of Jersey City, under arrest.

North Bergen wins grant for community garden
The Township of North Bergen has been awarded a $2,000 Sustainable Jersey grant funded by the PSEG Foundation. The grant will help fund a new community garden that the municipality has been planning after residents Jina Morano, Hailey Benson and others had petitioned the township for it.

Saint Peter’s Prep freshmen win Magis Awards
Saint Peter’s Preparatory School Principal Chris Caulfield announced that twenty freshmen in the class of 2025 were selected as the winners of the Magis Awards, which recognizes outstanding freshmen for their emerging leadership among their class.
The following Hudson County residents were recognized: Samer Saleh (Bayonne), Daniel Nemeth Szerdai, Finn Getz, and Declan Schultz (Hoboken), Blake Flores-Duncan, Henry Eig, Joseph Fiore, Akshay Kumar, Evan Nguyen, Kyle Oh, Feliz Puig Seppalainen (Jersey City), Aayush Sherchan (Weehawken), and Corey Greenfield and Aneel Ward (West New York).
Stack to introduce bill protecting Caven Point
After the Liberty State Park Conservation, Recreation, and Community Inclusion Act was amended to cut funding down from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and to increase the size of the Liberty State Park Task Force, state Senator and Union City Mayor Brian Stack of the 33rd Legislative District has announced that Caven Point will be preserved. Stack said he will introduce a new bill to protect Caven Point, a nature-filled area in the south of the park.

North Bergen adopts waterfront redevelopment plan
Mayor Nicholas Sacco and the North Bergen Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted an ordinance at a June meeting for a redevelopment plan covering a portion of the township’s Hudson River waterfront. While development approval was previously granted, plans never came to fruition for three 11-story buildings with 233 residential units and 517 parking spaces slated for the site in 2013.

WNY eyes changes to special police officer requirements
West New York has moved to amend the requirements for special police officers. Mayor Gabriel Rodriguez and the West New York Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to introduce an ordinance doing so at a June meeting.
