Hammonton man arrested for alleged sex crime in West New York

A South Jersey man has been arrested for committing an alleged sex crime on a woman in North Jersey, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.

On Sunday, July 10, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit arrested Rogelio Rendon-Mejia, a 42-year-old of Hammonton.

Rendon-Mejia was charged for committing a sex crime on a woman in West New York, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

The crime occurred in the early morning hours of July 10, following a gathering in an apartment on 51st Street.

The victim was not known to Rendon-Mejia and her 7-year-old son was present at the time the crime occurred.

Rendon-Mejia is charged with Aggravated Criminal Sexual Contact, a crime of the third degree, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, also a crime of the third degree.

He was arrested at the West New York Police Headquarters and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Special Victims Unit and West New York Police Department with the investigation and arrest.

The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
