A heat advisory for Hudson County has been extended to Sunday by the National Weather Service, which predicted this week’s 90 degree temperatures will last for several days more.
The heat advisory was issued early Tuesday morning, and was extended on Wednesday. Weather forecasts for the area show temperatures will range from the mid 90s to the low 100s today, and could reach nearly 100 on Sunday. The NWS also said there’s a chance for scattered to isolated thunderstorms this afternoon.
According to the NWS, a heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it’s 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.
Senior citizens and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk, alongside newborns, children, and pregnant women. Homes without air conditioning can also be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.
The agency recommends using air conditioning to stay cool at home or finding a place that has such, and to check on those that might be vulnerable.
An air quality alert was also issued for Hudson County that will last until 11 p.m. tonight, which means that the ground level ozone within the area may approach or exceed unhealthy levels.
