The Bayonne Fire Department will be taking applications for firefighter positions through the end of the summer. Public Safety Director Robert Kubert and Fire Chief Keith Weaver announced that applications would be accepted from July 1 to August 30. Apply online at: state.nj.us/csc.
City Council President Gary La Pelusa reiterated the announcement at the top of the July 13 council caucus meeting. “We encourage you to become a Bayonne firefighter,” he said.
The topic came back up at the July 20 regular council meeting. Residents asked a number of questions addressed to the council regarding the hiring of new firefighters, to which Kubert took the podium to address it.
“We’re doing the hiring now,” Kubert said, noting the academy that trains firefighters is open from March to October and the department tries to fill openings as they are made available. The city is looking to add more firefighters since 13 firefighters were sworn in back in January.
The Bayonne Fire Department is looking for new recruits, plastering the message on physical flyers, on social media, and the city’s website, in multiple languages. To qualify, applicants must be: between the ages of 18 and 34; a U.S. citizen; live in the city of Bayonne; have a valid New Jersey Driver’s License; and a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
The job offers “excellent benefits and pension, paid vacation, and a rotating work schedule,” according to the department. Additionally, the Bayonne Fire Department is an equal opportunity employer. Women and minority groups are encouraged to apply.
“We’ve hired numerous firemen, women… of all nationalities,” Kubert said. “We have to reach out. We want to reach out. We want to represent the community.”
Information is available at the Bayonne Fire Headquarters at 201-858-6008 at 630 Avenue C. For more information, go to bayonnenj.org/Departments/fire-department.
