CarePoint Health Opens The Dr. Hemant Shah Research Center at Christ Hospital

The Center will nurture learning and discovery and support

CarePoint Health System held a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 10 for the opening of the new “Dr. Hemant Shah Research Center” at Christ Hospital — named after Dr. Hemant Shah, an Attending Physician at the hospital, community leader and philanthropist.

The naming of the research center celebrates the generous donation from Dr. Shah’s foundation that made it possible and the decades-long positive impact he has had on Hudson County.

The event was attended by Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, CarePoint CEO Dr. Achintya Moulick, Assemblyman Raj Mukherji, Councilwoman Joyce Watterman, Councilman Yousef Saleh, Christ Hospital Chief Hospital Executive Marie Duffy, Dr. Hemant Shah and members of his family, and other local and hospital system officials.

It also included a symposium on healthcare research where several leading physicians discussed cutting-edge advancements in the field.

“I want to personally extend my deepest gratitude to Dr. Hermant Shah for his generous contribution to our new research center at Christ Hospital, as well as our auditorium at Hoboken University Medical Center. His contribution is greatly appreciated and it will be a tremendous boost to our mission of bringing in healthcare advances through clinical, epidemiological and  translational research,” said CarePoint President and CEO Dr. Achintya Moulick.

“For the last forty years Dr. Shah has provided essential and equitable health care to families throughout Hudson County. Today, with his generous gift  to our hospitals the Jersey City community will have another facet in healthcare advancement with the opening of the Dr. Hemant Shah Research Center. This will allow us to continue to be the leader in patient-centered, equitable care.”

Dr. Hemant Shah was born in India and moved to the United States of America to pursue his career in the medical field. He is a long-time resident of Jersey City since moving to the United States.

Dr. Shah is a Board-Certified Family Practice Physician and is currently an Attending Physician at two of CarePoint Health System’s Hospitals — Hoboken University Medical Center and Christ Hospital. Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Shah has successfully held the office of Health Commissioner of the City of Jersey City from 1993-1994 along with several leadership and board positions in various hospitals in Hudson County.

“It is an honor that CarePoint has decided to name this research center after me. I have been dedicated to the people of Hudson County as long as I have been here — both in my career as a physician and as a member of the Jersey City community myself,” said Dr. Hemant Shah.

“I have high hopes that this center will allow us to continue serving the people of Jersey City, and the surrounding areas, with top-tier levels of medical research and patient care. The Hemant Shah Research Center will continue to make Christ Hospital and CarePoint Health synonymous with community care.”

The Dr. Hemant Shah Research Center’s mission will be to support research at CarePoint Health System, encourage participation in research within the healthcare communities, facilitate mentoring relationships and collaboration between healthcare communities, provide research and grant opportunities, and to support the assimilation of research experiences in the acute care and community setting. It will add to the ongoing progress at Christ Hospital, which was named last year as the most Socially Responsible Hospital in America by the Lown Institute.

“I’m excited to welcome the Dr. Hemant Shah Research Center to Jersey City. This is a major opportunity to continue placing Jersey City at the forefront of cutting-edge medical research to better serve our communities,” said Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop.

“Outstanding healthcare facilities are one of the pillars of any great city, and with the leadership here at CarePoint all of the ingredients are present to continue improving Christ Hospital and making it one of the best in the state. CarePoint’s approach to health care is focused on putting the needs of our immediate and most vulnerable communities first, and I’m eagerly looking forward to the future of this research center and what it will mean for Jersey City.”

“The healthcare workers of CarePoint have been on the front lines of the war against the global pandemic for more than two years, and the system has distinguished itself as a leader in community-led health care while taking steps to protect Christ Hospital and the entire system as acute care hospitals,” said Assemblyman Raj Mukherji.

“I’m inspired by Dr. Shah’s incredible generosity and grateful to Dr. Moulick for his leadership and progress toward transforming community healthcare at CarePoint.”

The Dr. Hemant Shah Research Center is located within CarePoint Health — Christ Hospital at 176 Palisade Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07306.
