New primary care clinic on Kennedy Boulevard

Hackensack Meridian Health Group has added a primary care clinic in North Bergen at 6045 Kennedy Boulevard for family and pediatric practice. Commissioners Julio Marenco and Allen Pascual were joined by Township Administrator Janet Castro and North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue Executive Director Michael DeOrio to cut the ribbon officially on Wednesday, August 17.

Physicians Maria Chavez Santos, M.D. and Carolyn Peart, M.D. provide bilingual services, including annual physicals and screenings, wellness and sick visits, preventative care, chronic disease care management, routine vaccinations, prescription refills, education and counseling, nutrition, women’s health, family planning, and more. They can also make referrals to Hackensack Meridian’s network of medical specialists.

Jersey City Police and Fire 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive to be hosted on Sept. 9

The Jersey City Department of Public Safety is collaborating with the American Red Cross and Suburban Propane for the eighth annual Jersey City Police and Fire 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive.

The blood drive will take place on Sept. 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Hudson Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel at 2Exchange Place. Parking will be validated for all donors at One Parking, located at 10 Exchange Place. All donors will receive a Red Cross first aid kit, courtesy of Suburban Propane.

North Bergen to host Citizen Police Academy

The North Bergen Police Department (NBPD) will be hosting its first Citizen Police Academy (CPA) this fall. The CPA is a 10-week program designed to give citizens an understanding of the operations of the NBPD.

Weekly classes will be approximately two hours in duration and will be held Wednesday evenings from October 5 to December 14. Applicants must be 18 years old and be residents of North Bergen.

Applications are available at NBPD Headquarters, 4233 Kennedy Boulevard or can be downloaded from northbergenpolice.com. Applications must be received by September 5.

Hoboken acquires $1.2 million for new electric garbage truck and shuttle bus

The City of Hoboken announced that the state Department of Environmental Protection is providing about $1.2 million in state funding for the purchase of the city’s first electric garbage truck and HOP shuttle bus.

The city said that the new electric vehicles will save them $1.1 million in fuel over the next 15 years based on current usage rates, as well as eliminating the usage of about 17,500 gallons of diesel fuel per year.

‘Food Trucks on Grand’ returns to North Bergen

“Food Trucks on Grand” once again attracted the hungry and the curious on Wednesday, August 24, for some menu options from Savage Burger. Neighborhood residents gathered at picnic tables beneath an awning to enjoy elaborately garnished burgers and hot dogs, fries layered in mozzarella and Colombian sausage, and much more.

Hudson County fire departments to receive $247,000 in federal grants

U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker from New Jersey announced that three Hudson County fire departments will receive about $247,000 in federal grants from the Assistance to Firefighter Grant to improve safety and operations.

The following departments are:

  • West New York: $170,076.36
  • Secaucus: $38,617.03
  • Hoboken: $38,304.54

‘Touch-a-Truck’ a hit with kids

Hundreds of kids and their families showed up to “Touch-a-Truck” in the main library parking lot on Friday, August 12. With vehicles from the police, fire department, DPW sheriff’s department, EMT, and more, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to climb aboard, hit the sirens, and learn about the trucks and the people who use them.

Some kids even suited up in firefighter gear or hefted SWAT equipment to really get the feel of it. Youngsters enjoyed free face painting while a K-9 officer happily greeted everyone. Afterward, the library treated everyone to free ice cream from an ice cream truck. Library Executive Director Sai Rao and her staff made sure everyone enjoyed themselves.

Hoboken High School Class of 1973 to host 50th Class Reunion

The Hoboken High School Class of 1973 will be hosting a 50th anniversary class reunion, with preliminary plans to host it in Hoboken on Oct. 24, 2023.

North Bergen hosts overdose awareness event and vigil

North Bergen’s Bruin Stadium in Braddock Park hosted a Candlelight Vigil and Memorial Walk on Wednesday, August 17, in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Month. The event was organized by the Hudson and Bergen County Prosecutors’ Offices in conjunction with the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office’s Operation Helping Hand in an effort to educate the public about the opioid epidemic, offer addiction and recovery resources, and help end the stigma associated with overdose deaths.

Mayor Nicholas Sacco was among the speakers at the event, along with Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez. Numerous experts and recovered addicts also spoke, followed by a memorial walk around the track in memory of those lost to the opioid epidemic.

Commissioners Hugo Cabrera, Julio Marenco, and Allen Pascual participated in the event, along with Police Chief Peter Fasilis. more than one dozen community groups had tables and stands with resource materials available at the end of the vigil.
