Need-to-know info about Route 440 closures in Bayonne

The work may be finished as soon as September 2

The Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority (JCMUA) will begin emergency work on sewer mains under Route 440 and Danforth Avenue beginning Friday, August 26. This will have a detrimental impact on traffic in Bayonne, according to Bayonne Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Coordinator Eduardo “Junior” Ferrante.

“There is a partial collapse of large sewer mains under the roadway,” Ferrante said in recent video message on the subject. “This has caused the immediate need to correct this very dangerous situation. This work must be performed and it must be done quickly.”

Route 440 North and Route 185 North will be closed. Route 440 South will be closed at Communipaw Avenue.

“This means that no through traffic will be allowed to access Route 185 or the Route 440 North connector from the east side of Bayonne just past Pulaski Street,” Ferrante said.

All traffic on Route 440 North in Bayonne will be directed onto the New Jersey Turnpike. Route 440 North will also be closed from all other access points, including Avenue C at City Line, West 63rd Street, and all Country Village access roads. The last exit on Route 440 North in Bayonne before the New Jersey Turnpike will be Pulaski Street.

Construction timeline

The work is expected to take 14 days total. However, the northbound section which affects Bayonne closures, may only take seven days.

“Officials feel that the northbound lanes should be closed for seven days, which means we could see Bayonne’s closures reopen on Friday, September the 2nd,” Ferrante said. He did note that operational issues and weather conditions may affect this schedule.

According to Ferrante, the potential for significant delays is high. Motorists should allow for extra time and use alternative routes, such as the Bayonne Bridge. All motorists are strongly advised to avoid this closure area.

“We expect to see extensive delays on the Route 440 corridor in Bayonne, the New Jersey Turnpike Extension, and all local streets for motorists attempting to leave Bayonne,” Ferrante said. “Conversely, southbound traffic on Route 440 may be shut down as far back as Communipaw Avenue and the impacts of that closure will be felt throughout Jersey City and possibly Kearny and Newark.”

Mayor James Davis said he has been working closely with the Bayonne Police Department, Bayonne OEM, New Jersey Turnpike, and Port Authorities, and many agencies inside Jersey City, aiming to lessen the impacts on Bayonne residents.

Follow city for updates

“I have directed Bayonne Office of Emergency Management to keep the public advised throughout this emergency work effort,” Davis said in robocall on August 19. ” Please keep an eye out on all the city’s social media platforms, the city website, and local news outlets for the latest information.”

“The mayor has directed OEM to keep our community advised and aware of this work, traffic conditions, and any other information that can assist our residents and their ability to navigate around the work,” Ferrante said.

Ferrante encourage residents to enroll in the Swift911 Emergency Notification System at bayonnenj.org and enable SMS text messages to receive latest updates. He said that residents can also get more information going to the city’s official website  or following the Bayonne OEM on social media.

Davis said, “We know the potential for inconvenience is high, and I want to thank you all in advance for your patience, as this critical work is performed. I want to take a moment to wish you all a happy and safe last couple of weeks of summer and I will see you around the town.”
