Salvadorian independence celebrated with annual parade

The annual Salvadorian Parade marched down Bergenline Avenue on Sunday, September 18, much to the delight of the crowds who turned out dressed in bright blue, waving Salvadorian flags. Mayor Nicholas Sacco led the parade, joined by Commissioners Hugo Cabrera, Julio Marenco, and Allen Pascual. Accompanying them were Assemblypersons Angelica Jimenez and Pedro Mejia, Union City Mayor and State Sen. Brian Stack, and many other local and regional officials.

Jersey City cannabis board approves four applicants

The Jersey City Cannabis Control Board approved four applicants at their Sept. 12 meeting, which included Aunt Mary’s in McGinley Square; Bud Space, Cream Dispensary and Cannaboutique by Greenhouse, who are all in Downtown.

The board also denied Canabee, who would’ve been located in the Heights, and two other applicants, Artistic Dispensary and Idyllx, for being too similar to each other.

Stevens Cooperative School celebrates Sergio Alati’s first decade as Head of School

Stevens Cooperative School congratulated Sergio Alati for completing his first decade as the Head of School, having been with them since 2012.

Alati oversaw expansions of the school’s Newport (Jersey City) campus and its Early Childhood Program, the addition of Latin and Mandarin to the World Languages program and flag football, volleyball and track to the athletics program.

North Bergen Housing Authority receives ‘Community Impact Award’

The North Bergen Housing Authority (NBHA) was recently recognized for its commitment to its residents during the pandemic by the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO), and was presented with the prestigious “Community Impact Award” at the NAHRO National Conference and Exhibition on Thursday, September 22, in San Diego.

According to the township, a member of the NBHA staff attended the national conference to accept the award, participate in education sessions, make valuable new contacts, develop relationships, and research new housing products, technologies, and solutions.

Union City wins 10-year fight for tenants 

Union City Mayor and State Senator Brian Stack has announced a historic rent protection settlement that restores tenant rights for 20 families displaced by a fire nearly 10 years ago at 409-415 Bergenline Avenue.

North Bergen cuts ribbon opening ‘The Muse’

The Township of North Bergen held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, September 16  to mark the opening of the highly-anticipated urban luxury residence The Muse, located at 8133 Bergenline Avenue.

The newly-constructed luxury residence consists of six floors, with 24 one-bedroom units, a parking garage, a gym, and a rooftop deck overlooking both the New York City skyline and the Meadowlands.

Iowa man pleads guilty to 2017 Secaucus bank robbery

An Iowa man has admitted robbing a bank in Secaucus in January of 2017, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced on September 14. He robbed the Bank of America located at 700 Plaza Drive in the Harmon Meadow section of town.
