Bayonne to ‘go bananas’ for Buddy Baseball

The city is holding an event to help get its Special Needs Buddy Baseball League to see a Savannah Bananas game for free

The Bayonne Division of Recreation is set to ‘go bananas’ for Buddy Baseball. The Division is hosting the “Bayonne Goes Bananas for Buddy Baseball Day” on Saturday, December 3, at 4 p.m. at the Bayonne High School Ice Rink Gym.

Buddy Baseball is a program for developmentally and physically challenged youth, helping them to enjoy the full benefits of baseball participation in an athletic environment structured to their abilities. It has become one of the Divisions of Recreation’s top programs and is a fan favorite in Bayonne.

The event is a promotion for to help the Buddy Baseball League to see the Savannah Bananas exhibition baseball team, featuring eccentric rules and a circus atmosphere. From the first-base coach dancing and the team celebrating home runs by racing into the stands for high-fives, to launching into a brief, choreographed routine between pitches only to resume play as if nothing happened, the Bananas put their own spin on the game.

At the event, the goal is break the world record for the most bananas peeled and eaten in 1 minute is 8. If anyone can successfully peel and eat 9 full size bananas in 1 minute and get it on video, tickets to a Savannah Bananas game are free for the Buddy Baseball League.

The Division of Recreation has already secured 150 tickets to take the league to attend the Savannah Bananas Baseball game in Staten Island on August 12, 2023. They are looking to find that one person who can beat this record, and help send Buddy Baseball to the game, free of charge.

For those who think they can beat the record and eat nine Bananas, email a name, address, and cell phone number to bayonnerec@aol.com. They will be added you to the list of contestants looking to help send out Buddy Baseball athletes to the game, at no cost.

There is no cost to participate. The contest is open to anyone ages 18 and over.

Additionally, the Division of Recreation is looking for sponsors for the event and to sponsor a contestant. All sponsors and contestants will receive a free “Bayonne Goes Banana for Buddy Baseball” T-Shirt.

Deadline for sponsors and contestants is Friday, November 25. Checks to made payable to City of Bayonne.

All proceeds will go directly towards Buddy Baseball. If the Division cannot beat that record, it will be proud that the city gave it their all for a great cause.
