Is Rome our elder brother?

Dear Editor:

Rome before Caesar was the America of the ancient world. It was the best built democracy the world had ever seen, because it did the most to help its citizens succeed and contribute to society.
For example, every male citizen was required to participate in public service like militias, juries, and even public office. Many public offices were actually rotated from one upstanding citizen to another without an election. Their names were drawn out of a hat!
Everyone got a taste of governing in Rome.
One of the things the city did was step in to help citizens who were destroying their lives by mismanaging their earnings and assets. The government appointed “caretakers” to help manage the affairs of “spendthrifts,” those who engaged in excessive or wasteful spending.
Do we in America care enough about our children and our neighbors to do something like this here, to show our democratic concern and Christian love for others? Nope, because we are no longer a democracy, and no longer have “christian” concern for others.
