New Poll Shows Challenges for Biden and Trump in Potential 2024 Rematch

A recent poll by NBC News indicates that almost 75% of Americans, including 51% of Democrats, are not in favor of President Joe Biden running for reelection.

This poll emerges as several reports suggest that Biden will declare his candidacy for a second term this week. Among those surveyed, 70% oppose Biden’s bid for reelection, while 26% are in support. Biden’s age was identified as a “major” concern by 48% of those who voted against his reelection.

Concurrently, 60% of Americans expressed that they do not want former President Donald Trump to run for office in 2024, with only 35% in favor. This comes after Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony charges related to falsifying business records connected to 2016 hush-money payments.

Approximately 68% of GOP primary voters agreed that the investigations into the former president have political motivations.

When questioned about their preferred GOP candidate in a presidential primary held today, 46% chose Trump, while 31% selected Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Former Vice President Mike Pence received 6% of the votes, followed by former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott.

2024 Presidential Campaign Uncertainties

A USA TODAY/Suffolk Poll highlights challenges for both Biden and Trump in a potential 2024 White House rematch. Biden’s support among 2020 voters is broad but shallow, and it may be weakened by a credible Democratic contender or a third-party candidate.

In contrast, Trump’s backing among his 2020 voters is deep but narrow, solidified by controversies that may hinder his ability to broaden his support in the general election.

The poll, consisting of 600 Biden voters and 600 Trump voters, was conducted via landline and cellphone from April 15-18 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

A significant 93% of Trump’s 2020 voters approve of his presidential performance and 45% claim they are more enthusiastic about voting for him in 2024. For Biden, 85% of his 2020 voters approve of his work as president, but 43% say they are less excited about supporting him in the future.
