No one seemed to be able to pull away from the pack as the Jewish Community Center of Bayonne’s Indoor Soccer Senior Division marched into the halfway point of its 2013 season. The Sonics stand at (1-2) while the Comets hold a (2-1) record, but clearly no one ruled the roost in the Senior Division. As the game got underway, the Sonics took a quick 1-0 lead as Ajay Lal notched his second goal of the season off an assist from Shashwat Punjani. The Sonics’ defense played well throughout the game as they swarmed the ball and frustrated the Comets’ league-leading offense as Brandon Ferreira, Ryan Ballance, Chloe Gregory and Tyler Cholankeril harassed the Comets’ shooters at every turn.

Down by one goal, the Comets got a lucky break as Drew Radil’s howitzer blast from net to net sent the ball and the Sonics’ goaltender into the net to tie the fray at one-all. Undaunted by the miscue, the Sonics rolled as Kevin Aguilar zipped a pass to Shashwat Punjani, who drilled the ball to net, making it 2-1, Sonics. Punjani continued his assault on the Comets’ net by quickly firing in his second goal, this time off an assist by Tyler Cholankeril, to stretch the Sonics’ lead to 3-1.

For the Comets, their offensive woes kept mounting as Alexandro Gonzalez, James Bajor, Joshua Verzosa, and Natallyah Teixeira could make little headway against the Sonics’ stonewall defense. The news wasn’t all bad for the Comets as Allen McComb, Michael Largo and their defensive dynamo Elliott Santana fought valiantly to right the ship. But the Sonics would not be deterred as James Johnson assisted Kevin Aguilar with a game-clinching goal as the Sonics rolled to a 4-1 win.

The Senior Division Players of the Week for week three were: Offensive Player of the Week – Shashwat Punjani, Sonics; Defensive Player of the Week – James Johnson, Sonics; Teamwork/Leadership Player of the Week – Brandon Ferreira, Sonics.
