Hoboken waterfront named 'A Great Place in New Jersey'
The New Jersey chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NJ), a non-profit educational organization that studies and works on community development throughout the state, named Hoboken’s southern waterfront one of 2013’s Great Places in New Jersey, the city announced on Tuesday.
The annual list of attractions recognizes unique downtown districts, streets, neighborhoods and public spaces. Hoboken’s waterfront was one of two public spaces added to this year’s list, the other being Cooper River Park in Camden County.
“I am delighted that the city of Hoboken is receiving this honor,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “The waterfront is the treasure of our city and underscores why Hoboken is a great place to live, work, and visit.”
APA-NJ’s president, Charles Latini, juxtaposed the waterfront’s past and present in describing why his organization chose it as an honoree.
“The city of Hoboken has shown great vision by realizing the enormous opportunity offered by its neglected waterfront properties in need of redevelopment,” said Latini. “This former industrial seaport has been transformed into a remarkable public space with tremendous vitality and world-class skyline views.”
APA-NJ officers will recognize this achievement in a presentation at an Oct. 17 city council meeting at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The following day, representatives from the city and APA-NJ will join forces to host a waterfront walk open to all, at 2 p.m. It is set to last about two hours, and will embark from Pier A Park at 100 Sinatra Drive.
Weekend-long tasting event at King’s Supermarket
In honor of its anniversary, the North Hoboken King’s Supermarket, located on Shipyard Lane between Twelfth and Thirteenth streets, is in the midst of holding a weekend long celebration featuring signature tastings and Cooking Studio demonstrations as well as an exclusive book signing and giveaway from Hoboken-based chef and co-author of Fifty Shades of Kale, Jennifer Iserloh.
Shoppers who attend the weekend-long celebration will have the opportunity to taste their way through the store with samplings from all of Kings Food Markets’ departments.
NAMI Hudson holding presentation Oct. 8 in Hoboken
NAMI Hudson, a nonprofit group for loved ones of people with mental illness, will hold a presentation, “Plan NJ,” on Oct. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hoboken Community Mental Health Center, 506 Third St. Parking is available behind the center.
Plan NJ (Planned Lifetime Network of NJ) is a non-profit organization that helps consumers and their families answer the question, “Who will care for my loved one when I am gone?” Plan NJ can help families with monitoring, advocacy, guardianship, coaching, guidance, permanent repository, community and private trust administration, and benefits administration.
“Plan NJ can help with a one-time effort that will assist in helping with the financial, legal, and social resources needed for the consumer's future,” said Agnes Byrne of NAMI. “After the plan is created, there is an opportunity to update as needed.”
There is a cost involved, but it is within the reach of most families, according to Byrne. Financial assistance and scholarship may be available.

Hoboken Family Alliance to hold All Schools Open House on Thursday
The Hoboken Family Alliance (HFA) will hold its 9th Annual All Schools Open House for the community on Thursday, Oct.10. The event is an annual forum for parents to evaluate school options in Hoboken and the surrounding area. HFA has invited representatives from all of the area schools to meet with interested parents from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The event will be held in the Hoboken High School gymnasium, located at 800 Clinton Street. The event is free for HFA members, and $10 for non-members.
Parents will have the opportunity to visit all the local schools in one location and receive information summarizing the various programs – age requirements, tuition (if applicable), registration/application deadlines, and other questions.
School grades will be identified so that parents can focus on what schools make sense for their family’s needs. Last year, over 20 area schools attended, including members from charter, public and private schools.

Help foster children by attending CASA information session Oct. 8
Are you interested in helping children in the foster care system? If so, Hudson County CASA (court appointed special advocate) is recruiting volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children.
An information session to learn more about the program and the role of its volunteers will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Room #400 of the Hudson County Administration Building at 595 Newark Avenue in Jersey City.
CASA works through trained community volunteers to ensure that needed services and assistance are made available to children while helping to move them toward safe and permanent homes.
CASA and its volunteers speak for children in court, serve as fact finders for judges, and safeguard the interests of the children while they are in the foster care system.
Hudson County has nearly 700 children in foster care; most have been removed from their homes for abuse or neglect.

Volunteers wanted for Hudson Medical Reserve Corps
If you would like to volunteer during public health emergencies and natural disasters in Hudson County or elsewhere, the Hudson Regional Health Commission (HRHC) Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is looking for you.
MRC units are made up of locally based volunteers (with or without a medical background). They include medical and public health professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, mental health professionals, dentists, veterinarians, and epidemiologists. Other community members, such as interpreters, chaplains, office workers, and legal advisers, fill vital support positions.
Volunteers give a minimal amount of time and have the choice to respond locally only or to be deployed outside the county. MRC volunteers were an important part of the Superstorm Sandy response. They gave more than 450 hours, helping at shelters and acting as translators.
Volunteers participate in various trainings and drills throughout the year, enhancing their preparedness skills, and heightening their ability to respond to many different types of events.
Hudson County’s Emergency Management, police, fire, EMS, and public health professionals are working hard to identify, train for, and respond to emergencies that could impact those who live and work here, but more help is needed.
