On Wednesday, five families were affected by a fire at 217 Hackensack Plank Road in Weehawken.

The American Red Cross Disaster Action Team responders said on Thursday that they were meeting with the families, including 11 individuals, to determine their immediate needs. The Red Cross planned to provide emergency assistance for temporary lodging, food and clothing assisistance.

The five-alarm fire ripped through a three-story building around 9 a.m. on Wednesday. It took six hours to bring it under control. One police officer was treated for smoke inhalation after he got tenants out of the building before the Fire Department could arrive.

As of press time, the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
