Funeral mass was celebrated March 1 at St. Mary’s Church, Jersey City, for Marina Tosta, 87 of Jersey City. She passed away Feb. 24. Born in Honduras, she lived in Jersey City since 1959. She was a retired custodian from the Jersey City Board of Education, having worked in Number 9 School, downtown. Marina was very involved in the community. She served as president of the Sagrado Corazon de Jesus Society of St. Peter’s Church, now of Resurrection Parish, for many years and was a current member of the Rosary Group, which travel and pray for the faithful departed. She was an active member of the PACO agency and spearheaded hurricane relief efforts in Honduras in the wake of Hurricane Fifi in 1974.

Marina and her husband, the late Gilbert Tosta, were proud of their appearance in the movie “Caught” (1996) featuring Edward James Olmos and Maria Conchita Alonso in a scene filmed on Central Avenue in Jersey City. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her family and escaping to Atlantic City, when possible. She was predeceased by her parents Nicolas and Angelica Carranza, her husband Gilbert Tosta (2012), her siblings Alicia Pena and the Most Reverend Jose Carranza Chevez, Bishop of Honduras. Surviving to cherish her memory are her children Marilyn Tosta-Davila (Luis), Jose G. Tosta, Jr., Nelson Tosta (Norma) and Lorena Zuber (Robert), 4 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren as well as many friends. Services arranged by the Introcase-Angelo Funeral Home, Jersey City.
