UNION CITY – The board of commissioners of the City of Union City commemorated Memorial Day on Friday, May 23 at 2 p.m. at War Memorial Plaza, Park Avenue & 46th Street in Union City.

Commissioner of Public Affairs Lucio Fernandez presided on behalf of Mayor Brian Stack and the Board of Commissioners as a wreath was laid at the foot of the statue.

“Memorial Day is the most sacred day of all of our holidays,” said Commissioner Celin Valdivia, “because it is the day that we recognize and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, from the colonial days when we fought the British until the battles right now in Afghanistan and Iraq.”

Also present was Commissioner and Freeholder Tilo Rivas, who thanked those overseas for their sacrifice.

In closing, Fernandez urged all to “take a moment to remember those persons who gave their lives for our freedom.” --Art Schwartz
