New Hoboken hotel plan matches Fund For A Better Waterfront’s vision

Dear Editor:
There is a plan before the City Council that will address the many planning problems on the now unsightly waterfront parcel between Newark and First Streets. It provides for a hotel on the L-shaped parcel wrapping around the post office on its east and north sides. The loading docks and parking lot will be replaced by a first-rate hotel set back to the property line with an expanse of glass facing east to the river and to the north along 1st Street.
This will transform what is now a dreary corner with little or no pedestrian access into a proper waterfront block with wide sidewalks, retail, restaurants and meeting spaces. And let’s not forget the $1.7 million in annual tax revenue.
In 1990, when developers targeted Hoboken’s derelict waterfront with plans to build condominiums and towering office buildings on the piers, the citizens developed their own plan. Devised by the Fund For A Better Waterfront, it called for contiguous public parks at the water’s edge and on the piers. Buildings, we said, were to be placed on the upland side of Sinatra Drive with front doors and ground floor retail facing the river. FBW’s plan won out. The result is our acclaimed, award-winning south waterfront.
That FBW’s original plan drafted in 1990 included an L-shaped building wrapping the post office is a testament to the timelessness of good planning.
The transformation of this block will be a great addition to our town, taking advantage of the mass transit hub just a block away and greatly enhancing safe public access to our treasured waterfront park.
