National Night Out celebrated throughout North Bergen

The 35th annual National Night Out events returned to North Bergen on Tuesday, Aug. 7. The town often celebrates the national observance with multiple events at once, and this year held a total of seven.
National Night Out is a community police awareness event designed to improve relations between police and residents. It encourages residents to stay on their porches to greet their neighbors, or attend safety fairs in their community.

Families enjoy it

The locations for North Bergen’s event this year included the Lawler Towers, Policeman’s Park, the Kennedy Elementary School, Broadway between 73rd and 76th streets, Applied Housing (near Kennedy Blvd.), 88th Street Park, and Meadowview Village.
Mayor Nicholas Sacco and his commissioners zipped from location to location via police escort, raffling off $25 Target gift cards and boys’ and girls’ bikes.
Kids got to ride on a special mini-train set up near the Meadowview Village housing complex. And over by Policeman’s Park on Union Turnpike, they were treated to ices and turkey sandwiches. The traditional hot dog and hamburger fare was also on tap at all locations.
“This is great what they do for the families of North Bergen,” said Jamie Pilgrim, a resident at Meadowview. She’s been coming to National Night Out every year for the past nine years.
Her daughter, Reese, 9, was amped for the bouncy houses and rock climbing wall.
State Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez accompanied Sacco, along with her 12-year-old daughter. To her, the event means “community, law enforcement, embracing each other. This is what it’s about.”
Isabelle Estrada, another resident, has been enjoying the event for the past five years. But she was more focused on making sure her young daughter was having fun.
