The late Anthony M. DeFino, who served as mayor from 1971 through 1995, is about to be honored by having Public School No. 2 named for him. Both U.S. Rep. Albio Sires and U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez also have schools named after them in the district.
The Board of Education approved the renaming after during its regular meeting Wednesday, Nov. 28. According to local reports, the board voted 6-1 with Trustee Lorena Portillo abstaining and trustee Jose Mendoza absent for the vote. Trustee Matthew Cheng voted no because, he said, “I want our children to inspired by our dedicated employees, not politicians.”
DeFino died in December 1996.
