A 16-year-old student from Snyder High School was fatally shot near Bidwell Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive on Dec. 26.
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said that on Wednesday, Dec. 26 at approximately 3:25 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department received a report of shots fired in the area of 209 Bidwell Ave. in Jersey City.
Jersey City police officers found an unresponsive male with apparent gunshot wounds at that location.
The victim, identified by the prosecutor’s office on Friday as as Judane Holmes, of Jersey City, was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 3:35 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has determined the cause of death to be gunshot wounds and the manner of death to be homicide.
The Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit is actively investigating this case with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department. No arrests have been made at this time. “We were devastated to hear about the murder of one more of our children on this holiday weekend,” said Board of Education President Sudhan Thomas in a statement. “This is the third dead child in as many months falling victim to guns on the streets of Jersey City. These are external social, economic factors that are continuing to devastate our children.”
He said the board will be focusing on this when it reconvenes in 2019.
