The North Bergen administration and the Parks and Recreation Department have green-lighted improvements to parks throughout the township. The aim is to construct, renovate, or beautify park space in six locations; most improvements are scheduled to be completed over the summer.
Two new parks are in the process of breaking ground; the township plans to break ground this summer on a new facility with a community center and library, and a public park on Paterson Plank Road will be laid out by the developers of Hudson Mews apartments, per an agreement they made with the township.
The resolution which locked in the grant funding for the community center and library complex passed in mid-January.
The township also included renovations in its budget to improve the 38th Street Policemen’s Memorial Park, the 43rd Street Park, the 64th Street softball field, the public swimming pool, and the 88th Street Park.
Construction is underway
The park on Paterson Plank Road will feature a children’s spray park, playgrounds with rubberized surfaces for children ages 2-12, two sets of swings, decorative lighting, parking areas, benches, and trash receptacles. It’s expected to open in time for the upcoming summer.
The North Bergen Community Center and Library will be a five-story building with two parking levels, at the former site of Kennedy Furniture.
The library will feature a computer lab, classrooms, quiet study areas, and multipurpose community rooms. The facility will have a fitness center including a basketball court with six hoops, fitness classrooms, and an outdoor fitness area. The building will be topped with a rooftop recreational field. The township anticipates a groundbreaking in the spring, and aims to complete construction in two years.
Peanuts and crackerjacks …
Some renovations to the 64th Street softball field will include synthetic turf, new LED field lighting, new bleachers, and new dugouts with bullpens attached. Construction is already underway; the township anticipates the field will be open in late spring of this year.
The 38th Street Policemen’s Memorial Park will have some new features, including a spray park, two playgrounds with rubberized surfaces, two sets of swings, a small basketball court, a dog run, and new decorative lighting. The township anticipates completion by July 4.
At the parks on 43rd Street and 88th Street, renovations will include resurfaced basketball courts, with new backboards, rims, and posts. Parks and Rec. hopes to break ground on these parks in the spring.
At North Bergen’s pool complex on 91st street, the township plans to resurface basketball and volleyball courts, replace the current basketball hoops, and re-plaster all the pools.
