Bayonne Fire Department claims victory in Chili Cook-Off
With a packed house of more than 300 chili lovers, the 3rd Annual Bayonne Chili Cook-Off was a huge success. The Bayonne Fire Department took the top prize in both the judges’ competition and the people’s choice.
The judges named BCB Bank as the second place winner, with Kuhl’s Tavern coming in third. The people’s choice for second place was the Bayonne Masonic Lodge, while third place went to BCB Bank. Hudson DNA and Drug Testing took home the award for best-dressed table.
Hosted by the Bayonne Chamber of Commerce, The Bayonne UEZ, and the City of Bayonne, this event continues to grow each year. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s event will go to the Bayonne Fire Canteen and St. Andrew’s Soup Kitchen.
Student arrested at Lincoln Community School
A student was arrested at Lincoln Community School in Bayonne following an incident during the lunch period, according to Principal Keith J. Makowski. As the student was returning to school from lunch, a knife was found after the entrance metal detector went off.
The uniformed school police officer was able to retrieve the weapon and detain the student. The Bayonne Police Department was subsequently notified, and the student was taken into custody.
Bayonne St. Patrick’s Day Parade postponed
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor James Davis has postponed the March 22 St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
“This is not a time for panic, it is a time to take prudent precautions,” Davis stated. “As a result, this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is being postponed.”
The parade and other public gatherings in the city are being postponed or cancelled as part of the COVID-19 preparations recommended on March 13 by Gov. Phil Murphy. According to Murphy, all public gatherings of more than 250 should be cancelled to avoid community spread of the virus.
Davis acknowledged that residents may be upset about the cancellations but reiterated that the health and safety of the residents of Bayonne are his priority.
“As mayor, I cannot, in good conscience allow for such a large public gathering that draws people from dozens of communities to take place,” Davis said. “I know this announcement will disappoint many people, but the health of our residents comes first.”
The Bayonne Economic Opportunity Fund’s St. Patrick’s Day Kick-Off Event on Friday, March 13 was cancelled as a result of the emergency declaration.
Pulaski Parade Sashing Brunch rescheduled
Due to the latest information and the expert analysis on the COVID-19, the Pulaski Parade Memorial Committee has decided at this time to postpone the Sashing Brunch honoring 2020 Bayonne Contingent Marshal Gary Chmielewski.
The new date for the event will be Saturday, May 16, at 11:30 a.m. at the Chandelier Restaurant, 1081 Broadway, Bayonne. Tickets are $45 for adults and $35 for students. Call Ann Dworzanski at 201-436-2244 with any questions.
March Movies at the Library cancelled
March Movies at the Library have been cancelled . On March 18, Kill the Irishman showing at the museum has been cancelled. The other showing on March 25, Evelyn, is also cancelled.
HCCC extends Spring Break
According to Hudson County Community College, Spring Break will begin one week early for all students due to COVID-19 concerns. Spring Break will begin next Monday March 16 and end Sunday, March 29.
During this time, the college will complete planning to migrate all classroom instruction to virtual instruction beginning Monday, March 30 through at least Monday, April 6, and possibly longer depending upon changing circumstances.
Zoning Board of Adjustment Meeting cancelled
The Bayonne Zoning Board of Adjustment regular meeting scheduled for March 16 has been cancelled. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 20. All meetings are held in the Dorothy E. Harrington Municipal Council Chambers in the Municipal Building at 630 Avenue C and will start at 6 p.m.
