Funeral services were held Sept. 3 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Jersey City, for Johnnie Bishop Canary of Jersey City. He passed away Aug. 27. He was born on Sept. 22, 1920, in Dillion, S.C. to the late William and Sallie Canary. After working various jobs, he started his career at Maxwell House in Hoboken in 1957, where he worked as a longshoreman in various locations until his retirement in 1987. Johnnie joined the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in 1983 and was a faithful member for over 37 years, where he served as the Father of the Church. Johnnie is preceded in death by his three sisters Louise Watson, Maywatt Nelson, and Mollie Canery. Two brothers Arthur and Roosevelt Canery. Five sons Johnnie, Larry, Arnold and Ronald Canery and Thomas Nixon. One Daughter Willie Dell Canery and two grandchildren Alethia Vines and Jeffrey Cox. Johnnie leaves to cherish his memories twelve children Sandra Canery, Brenda Swinney, Vanessa (Roy) Davis, Marilyn (Willie) Holly, Jane, Abrelle, Lonnie, Samanthia and Alethia Canary, Mary Barnes, and Michael and Charlece Bradley. Two sister’s Lizzie Ford and Polly Carmichael, one sister-in-law Etta Hatchett and one brother-in-law Walter Cutler. Twenty-three grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbors, and friends.
