Bravo Italia! Congratulazioni! Tanti Auguri!
Italy has won the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly known as the Euro Cup. The European Cup tournament started in 1960, and it is held every 4 years.
Twenty-four teams qualified and participated in Euro 2020 (postponed a year due to COVID-19). The tournament was played in 11 cities in 11 UEFA countries during June 11 – July 11.
Italia has appeared in 9 previous Euro Cup tournaments and won the Cup in 1968 (against Yugoslavia). The legendary Dino Zoff was the “Azzurri” goal keeper in the 1968 match.
Italy’s road to the championship was tough; the matches were challenging. Italy was undefeated during Euro 2020. The “Azzurri” defeated Turkey 3 -0 on June 11, Switzerland 3-0 on June 16, and Wales 1-0 on June 20. Italy eliminated Belgium, 2-1 on July 2 and Spain on penalty kicks, 4-2, on July 6. Finally, in London on July 11, Italy defeated England on penalty kicks, 3-2.
Forza Italia! Let’s toast the European champions with a glass of exquisite Italian wine! Now on to Qatar for the World Cup in 2022!
