Bayonne establishes TNR program

The trap, neuter, and release program will be run by animal control contractor NJ Humane Society

Bayonne has established a trap, neuter, and release (TNR) program to cope with the feral cat population in the city.

The City Council voted 4-0 for the program at its April meeting. Second Ward City Councilman Sal Gullace had left the meeting before the vote on this due to a family emergency.

The move comes after the Bayonne City Council approved the renewal of the city’s animal control contract with NJ Humane Society. Based in West New York, the organization run by Geoffrey Santini offers animal control and rescue services and owns a no-kill shelter at 6412 Dewey Avenue.

Since last year, the city has been eyeing a TNR program operated by Santini and the NJ Humane Society. However, there were issues with the location to operate the program out of and the need to get all the feral cat rescues in Bayonne on board. Now it seems those issues have been remedied.

Not all outdoor cats are feral. Some are strays that are fed by locals in the neighborhood and are friendly, like this feline.

While the city was previously thinking of using the old boathouse at end of the parking lot at 16th Street Park which was used for cat-related needs in the past, there are some issues with the building. It does not have heat or water, but does have electricity.

However, Law Director Jay Coffey told the Bayonne Community News that is no longer an issue because the cats will be brought to the aforementioned shelter in West New York as part of the arrangement. The resolution increases NJ Humane Society’s contract with the city by $25,000 and allow the operation of the TNR program.

Third Ward City Councilman Gary La Pelusa previously advocated for and secured an additional $5,000 for the program in the 2021 budget. La Pelusa joined the council in eagerly voting in favor of the resolution.

“I’m very happy to see this,” La Pelusa said. “It’s been a long time coming.”
