SlaughterDK, an up-and-coming North Hudson artist also known as Kevin Diaz, is returning to Greenhive Atelier for another solo exhibition. Born in North Bergen, raised in Guttenberg, and now with his own studio space in Union City, Diaz is set to hold another art show at Greenhive at 102 45th Street.
The pop-up art show will take place on June 17 and 18, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. This exhibit is entitled “Vesti La Giubba: A Clown is a Man.” The multimedia art display is inspired by the opera entitled “Pagliacci.”
“’Vesti La Giubba’ is the main song from ‘Pagliacci,’ which is an opera about a jealous lover clown who was almost like the originator of the sad clown paradox,” Diaz said. “Clowns are supposed to be happy and entertaining, but he was sort of a killer clown. So ‘Vesti La Giubba’ in Italian means ‘put on your costume,’ sort of saying to put on this mask so that you can face the world.”
The clown theme ties in with SlaughterDK’s persona. And the art show also touches on mental health awareness, an important topic in today’s climate.
“It’s also geared toward mental health,” Diaz said. “The show is meant to be about mental health awareness because people put on a costume to face the world when they may not be feeling that way inside.”
On display will be dozens of new pieces. The dark and twisted visions and nightmares straight from the mind of SlaughterDK will adorn the walls of Greenhive on June 17 and 18.
“I’ve been working on a lot,” Diaz said. “I’m going to be showing more than 20 new pieces.”
All art will be for sale, and donations at the door are appreciated. According to Diaz, a portion of the proceeds from all sales will be donated to The Trevor Project, a foundation geared towards providing mental health resources to the LGBTQ+ community.
“Any art sales, any print sales, any donations, 10 percent is going to the Trevor Project,” Diaz said.
Being a member of the community himself, Diaz said it was important for him to do something during Pride Month this June. For more information on the show or SlaughterDK, go to slaughterdkart.com or his instagram at @slaughterdkart.
