Students and friends hold vigil for brothers who drowned in Bayonne

Those close to 19-year-old Chu Ming Zheng and 16-year-old Jack Jiang remembered the two teens

Bayonne students and friends of the brothers who drowned in the Lincoln Community School pool recently gathered to remember the two teens lost too soon.

The brothers, 19-year-old Chu Ming Zheng and 16-year-old Jack Jiang, were pronounced dead by authorities on the evening of June 8. Mayor James Davis was among those present at the candle light vigil on June 20, which he praised as a fitting memorial for Zheng and Jiang at Stephen Gregg Hudson County Park in Bayonne.

“A beautiful and touching vigil was held for Chu-Ming and Jack this evening at Gregg Park,” Davis said in a statement on June 20.

At the vigil, those who knew both Zheng and Jiang offered heartfelt words regarding both boys.

“So many friends speaking so highly of two of our young neighbors who tragically passed away recently,” Davis said. “I am very proud of the students and friends who organized this tribute.”

Davis reminded all residents, especially students, that there are resources available to help cope in the wake of the tragedy.

“I want to remind everyone that you are never alone in Bayonne,” Davis said. “We look out for each other and help each other when needed. If you ever feel the need to talk about this accident or anything else you can speak to your teacher, principal, guidance counselor, or school nurse.”

In addition to those offerings, Davis noted that residents can contact him at City Hall, as well as other municipal hotlines.

“If you want to speak with me, come to my office or call me at 201-858-6010,” Davis said. “You can speak to any Bayonne police officer by calling 201-858-6900 or call 1-866-202-HELP (4357). If you need to speak to someone immediately, please dial 9-1-1 and we will get someone to you right away.”

A GoFundMe fundraiser webpage has been started to help support the family. Donate online at: gofundme.com/f/chu-ming-jacks-family?qid=16e0222b1fedc4ca38f024f0bc38eb39.
