Secaucus offers summer programs

For kids, the town offers a Summer Day Camp from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

With summer of 2022 in full swing, the town of Secaucus has a variety of recreation opportunities available for residents. In an interview with the Hudson Reporter, Superintendent of Recreation Mike Pero described all of the different options residents have for summer fun and relaxation.

Youth-oriented programs

For kids, the town offers a Summer Day Camp from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camp takes participants on a variety of trips, from the Turtle Back Zoo, to Funtime Junction, to American Dream, and  Medieval Times plus more. The field trips also include visits to the movies and municipal pool, as well as the roller skating rink and aquarium, among others.

We also have two other programs that have branched off of summer camp,” Pero said. “One is arts and crafts.”

There are two sessions of the Art and Crafts program that run for one and a half hours per session. For those seeking an athletic outlet as opposed to a creative one, there is a sports program called Game On, also with two sessions of one and a half hours.

“It’s kind of like a gym class,” Pero said.

The Summer Day Camp program and the Game On program take place at Secaucus High School at 11 Millrigde Road. Meanwhile, the Arts and Crafts program is run out of the pre-k building at 40 Millridge Road.

Pero said there has been a high interest in these programs this year. While the Summer Day Camp program is already at capacity, registration for the Arts and Crafts program and the Game On program is still open.

Summer concerts

Outside of those offerings, there is also weekly concerts. Every Thursday night at 7 p.m., there will be concerts in Buchmuller Park at 150 Plaza Center. The town is already holding concerts through June across Town.

Starting on June 16 with Steppin’ Out at the Monarch Park with food truck Crave Nation in attendance, the concerts continued on June 18 with Epic Soul at Xchange at Secaucus Junction, and The Jersey Tenors at Millridge Point on June 20. The June concerts will end on June 30 with Psychodelic Angel at the Swim Club at 2000 Koelle Boulevard for residents only.

“We’ve had a couple of concerts in different locations around town. But for the most part, once July comes they’re all in Buchmuller Park, with the exception of one.”

Summer concerts in Buchmller Park start on July 7 with Beatlemania Again, The Infernos Band on July 14, The Chiclettes on July 21, The Best of ABBA featuring Dancing Dream on July 28, Hourglass James Taylor Tribute Band on August 11, The Elegants on August 18, The Cameos on August 25, Neil and the Diamonds on September 1.

Showstoppers will take place on August 4 at the Performing Arts Center at Secaucus High School. This will take place in lieu of the summer concert that week, featuring a performance by local children.

“The kids work out for a couple of weeks and then put on a show in place of our concerts on a Thursday night,” Pero said. “That’s the only one that’s not in the park. Kids put on a little musical show. They practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays and then perform at the PAC Center at the high school.”

Movies in the park and more

Also in Buchmuller Park, the town shows movies every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The movies are screened in the ice rink while the concerts are held in the amphitheater in the park.

The first movie is “Spider-Man: No Way Home” at 8 p.m. at the Harmon Cove Towers Tennis Court. The rest of the movies will be shown in the ice rink including: “Sponge Bob on the Run” on July 5, “Clifford – The Big Red Dog” on July 12, “Sing 2″ on July 19, “Addam’s Family 2″ on July 26, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” on August 2, “Jungle Cruise” on August 9, “Cruella” on August 16, “Ghostbusters Afterlife” on August 23, and “Encanto” on August 30.

Additionally, the town pool recently opened to weekdays on top of weekends, last Monday. During the week, the Swim Club is open from 12 to 8 p.m. On weekends and holidays, the pool is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The town also holds a Summer Basketball program at the Recreation Center at 1200 Koelle Boulevard from Monday through Thursday. The girls’ program is on Mondays and Wednesdays, and the boys’ program is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The program is offered Three different groups: 6 p.m. for kindergarteners and first graders, 7 p.m. for second through fourth graders, and 8 p.m. for fifth through eighth graders. The town runs a Tennis Camp too, however, that is at the top of the summer in late April and early May.
