On Friday, October 11, Duke Farms is hosting a Fall Stewardship Workshop aimed at helping landowners and stewards better manage their natural resources. This six-hour hands-on workshop will cover topics like controlling invasive plants and managing deer populations. It’s a great opportunity to learn practical skills from local experts.

Event Details

The Fall Stewardship Workshop is a full-day event that will teach you important techniques for keeping your land healthy. You’ll learn how to spot and manage invasive plants, use seasonal management strategies, and understand why deer management plays a key role in protecting the environment.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • How to identify invasive plants
  • Which invasive plants to prioritize managing
  • Seasonal strategies for land management
  • The role of deer management in controlling invasive species

The workshop also offers Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) for professionals, including:

  • NJ Pesticide Control Program: 12 CEUs
  • New Jersey Urban and Community Forestry (NJUCF): 5.5 CEUs

Meet the Instructors:

  • Mike Bellaus, the Manager of Habitat Restoration at Duke Farms, has nearly a decade of experience managing local plant and animal life. He’s an expert in deer management and invasive species control and works with the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife on deer population surveys.
  • Mike Van Clef, Stewardship Director at FoHVOS, has over 25 years of experience in ecology and land management. He co-founded the Invasive Species Strike Team in New Jersey and holds a Ph.D. in ecology from Rutgers University.

Event Price and Conditions

The cost to attend the workshop is $75. Registration is required in advance, and refunds are available if you cancel at least 48 hours before the event. The workshop will be held rain or shine, but if severe weather causes cancellation, participants will be notified by email and refunded.

  • The workshop includes outdoor activities, so be prepared to walk on varied terrain (paved, unpaved, and uneven) for up to two hours.
