New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. left Thursday’s game against the Houston Astros in the fourth inning after sustaining contusions on both knees.
The first occurred at the bottom of the second inning when Ramón Urías hit a sharp grounder to second base. Chisholm went down to his right knee to field it and slammed his knee into the dirt.
The second happened in the bottom of the third inning when he tagged Jose Altuve out at second base, and Altuve’s helmet struck his left knee. Chisholm bent over in pain and hobbled off the field while holding the knee.
- Jazz Chisholm Jr. exited Thursday’s Yankees-Astros game with contusions on both knees after separate plays, though he expects to return against the Blue Jays.
- Chisholm clashed with umpire Brian Walsh after a questionable strike call, sparking controversy and fan debates on suspension.
- His injuries and disputes come during a strong offensive stretch, where he has hit 28 home runs and been one of the Yankees’ hottest bats since June.
Chisholm’s Exit and Postgame Comments
Chisholm took his turn at bat in the top of the fourth inning, struck out on three pitches, and limped back to the dugout. Cameras from YES Network showed him motioning that he was finished. He was replaced by José Caballero at second base in the bottom of the inning.
After the Yankees’ 8-4 win, Chisholm said, “[Friday] will be a good day. Get in tonight, keep on icing them, keep putting compression on them and I’ll be ready to go [Friday]. … I feel like they’re pretty good right now and I feel like [Friday] they’re going to feel a lot better. They’re still kind of bruised right now.”
He added, “We just went to check and see if there was any ligament damages or anything like that, just to make sure they were good and no tears, no crazy stuff going on. We’re good.” Entering Thursday, Chisholm was batting .288 with a 1.099 OPS and seven home runs over his previous 15 games.

The run line was Yankees -1.5 (+135) and Blue Jays +1.5 (-160), with the total again at 8.5, the over -115, and the under -105.
In futures markets, the Yankees’ World Series odds improved from +950 to +800 over two weeks. Earlier in the season, PointsBet listed the Yankees at +900. Player props also featured Jazz Chisholm Jr. DraftKings posted odds for his first plate appearance: Strikeout (+205), Single (+600), and Home Run (+1200). Broader home run props listed him at +350. Strike Call Ends Yankees Game Against Astros
In another game of the series against the Astros, the Yankees lost 8-7 when a strike call ended the contest. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was the final batter, and home plate umpire Brian Walsh called strike three. As the Astros and their fans celebrated, Chisholm argued with Walsh. Yankees relief pitcher Devin Williams entered in the eighth inning of a 4-4 game, walked three batters, and gave up one run, the first of four in the inning.
After the game, Williams said to Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News, “It’s just ridiculous to have the inning that I had, and then Jazz got the bat taken out of his hands on a pitch that was a lot further from the zone than the pitches I was making.”
Fan Reaction and Chisholm’s Response
The strike call and Chisholm’s argument with Walsh prompted fan reaction online. One fan wrote in a now-deleted post, “This is absolutely uncalled for and disgusting behavior by Jazz Chisholm. A gross representation of our great sport. A suspension of 10 games feels like the appropriate course of action.” Chisholm replied, “SMD.” He also retweeted New York Knicks guard Josh Hart, who wrote, “That Ump needs to be suspended. He’s trash.”

Chisholm has been ejected twice this season. One ejection came for arguing balls and strikes, and the other came for chirping at an umpire between innings, also about balls and strikes.
Chisholm’s Season and Yankees’ Roster Options
Earlier in the 2025 season, Chisholm missed time with an oblique injury. In early July, he had a minor shoulder injury that kept him out briefly, but he participated in the Home Run Derby one week later. For the season, he is batting .242/.339/.499 with 28 home runs, ranking third on the Yankees in home runs.
José Caballero replaced Chisholm in Thursday’s game. Caballero was traded to the Yankees from the Tampa Bay Rays at the deadline. He is a shortstop who was considered insurance for Anthony Volpe. The Yankees have said that Volpe remains their starter despite his struggles this season. After completing their series against the Astros, the Yankees are scheduled to face the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays.
