Hoboken Plans Spring Paving Across More Than 2 Miles Of Roadways

The City of Hoboken announced a spring paving initiative that will cover more than two miles of roadway across a minimum of 50 blocks throughout the city. Construction is scheduled to start in April 2026 and continue through early June.

The effort falls under the city’s Complete Streets and Resurfacing Program. Hoboken will coordinate the work with PSE&G and the North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) to restore streets affected by recent underground infrastructure construction.

Key Takeaways
  • Hoboken will mill and pave more than 2 miles of roadway covering at least 50 blocks beginning in April and continuing through early June 2026.
  • The project is a partnership involving the City of Hoboken, PSE&G, and the North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) following underground utility improvements.
  • Work will include Vision Zero safety improvements, refreshed high-visibility crosswalk striping, and curb ramp accessibility upgrades.

Utility Infrastructure Improvements Preceded Roadway Restoration

The roadway work follows several projects completed beneath city streets. These projects upgraded drinking water mains and pressure valves, replaced gas mains, and expanded storm sewer capacity, intended to reduce flooding.

Although those improvements addressed underground systems, the construction activity left road surfaces in poor condition in multiple areas following the winter season. The paving program will repair those streets.

Vision Zero Safety Measures And Accessibility Upgrades Included

Alongside resurfacing, Hoboken will add street safety improvements connected to the city’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

The work will include high-visibility striping to refresh crosswalks and roadway markings. Crews will also install curb ramp upgrades at several locations, improving accessibility for people navigating intersections and sidewalks.

Streets And Intersections Scheduled For Restoration

Roadway restoration between April and early June will occur on the following streets and intersections:

  • Fifth Street from Jefferson Street to Madison Street
  • Sixth Street from Grand Street to Adams Street
  • Seventh Street from Grand Street to Adams Street
  • Eighth Street from Grand Street to Jefferson Street
  • Ninth Street from Jefferson Street to Monroe Street
  • 10th Street from Jefferson Street to Madison Street
  • 11th Street from Madison Street to Monroe Street
  • 13th Street from Adams Street to Willow Avenue

  • Henderson Street from Hoboken City Boundary to Observer Highway
  • Observer Highway from Hoboken City Boundary to Southwest Resiliency Park and from Harrison Street to Madison Street
  • Newark Street from Madison Street to Henderson Street
  • Madison Street from Newark Street and Observer Highway
  • Madison Street from Fourth Street to Sixth Street, Eighth Street to 11th Street, and 13th Street to 15th Street
  • Jefferson Street from Observer Highway to First Street and 13th Street to 16th Street
  • Grand Street from 13th Street to 16th Street
  • Clinton Street from 13th Street to 16th Street
  • Adams Street from Eighth Street to Ninth Street and 15th Street to 16th Street
  • Intersection of Fifth Street and Monroe Street
  • Intersection of Seventh Street and Monroe Street
  • Intersection of Seventh Street and Madison Street

The paving areas include corridors such as Observer Highway, Madison Street, and Jefferson Street.

Additional Roadway Work Scheduled Later In 2026

Further resurfacing projects are planned later in the year. These include Sinatra Drive South between First Street and Fourth Street and Hudson Place.

Project Schedule And Funding Information

Construction timelines may change depending on weather conditions. The city will issue advance notices before work begins on each roadway, including information about traffic changes and parking impacts.

Most of the paving projects are funded through grants and utility capital projects.

Information about paving schedules and other city construction activity is available through the City of Hoboken Construction Updates page at www.hobokennj.gov/construction.
