Novado Gallery in Jersey City, New Jersey, will present Of Matter and Light, a two-artist exhibition featuring paintings by Robert Glisson and Brooke Lanier. Curated by Anne Novado and Eleazar Sanchez, the show runs from November 8 to December 6, 2025. An opening reception and Artist Talk will take place on November 8 from 6 pm to 9 pm.
The exhibition explores how matter and light interact. It looks at how solid forms can feel light and how light can feel present, guiding the viewer between clear shapes and softer, fading moments. Both artists work with memory, atmosphere, and shifting space, creating scenes that move between what is seen and what is sensed.

Brooke Lanier’s Maritime Reflections
Brooke Lanier earned her MFA from Tyler School of Art, where she also spent time studying in Rome, Italy, and earned her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Lanier paints ships, docks, and water, focusing on how solid structures meet reflection and movement. Her work often shows boats and waterfront settings as steady but also full of motion, changing with light and water.
Her interest in maritime history includes supporting the SS United States and helping with the restoration of the historic ship Gazela, where she served as Artist in Residence in 2022. A work tied to this show is “SS United States Port Bow Curve 2,” 2024, oil on panel, which looks at shape, memory, and surface reflection.
Robert Glisson’s Light-Filled Landscapes
Robert Glisson studied art at Cortland State College and continued training at Syracuse University. He has created work for the Syracuse Chiefs, the Stamford Science & Nature Museum, and Prometheus Book Publishers.
Glisson begins his paintings outdoors and completes them in the studio, guided by memory and emotion. His art moves between realism and abstraction, using soft tones and open space to express atmosphere rather than precise detail.
In his work, light becomes part of the scene, shaping form and depth. His 2024 painting Morning Walk (oil on canvas) shows this balance, using color and light to capture the quiet feeling of being present in nature.
Shared Themes and Gallery Info
Seen together, the artists create a calm and steady flow between land and water, stillness and movement, weight and brightness. Glisson’s soft landscapes and Lanier’s reflective harbor scenes both explore how light can shape form and how moments can feel clear and fading at once.
