On Saturday, January 18, 2025, a photography workshop will take place, offering participants a chance to learn and practice composition techniques with guidance from a professional photographer. This hands-on event is perfect for photography enthusiasts who want to improve their skills while exploring a historic and visually rich location.
The workshop runs from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM EST and will be held at The Newark Museum of Art, located at 49 Washington Street, Newark, NJ. Established in 1909, the museum is the largest in the state and offers plenty of stunning photo opportunities, from its striking architecture to its beautifully curated art collections. The museum’s unique design, featuring arched details and dramatic structural angles, makes it an ideal setting for honing photographic techniques.
Participants will spend three hours learning to capture both the exterior and interior of the museum. Outside, you’ll explore techniques like shooting from low angles to frame the building against the sky or creating compositions that include landscaping, stairs, and people to add scale and context. Inside, the museum’s natural lighting creates opportunities to photograph window-lit sculptures, paintings, and artifacts, while practicing methods like the Rule of Thirds, symmetry, and leading lines to bring order and charm to otherwise complex scenes. Whether it’s a visitor admiring a display or a gallery filled with diverse artwork, the instructor will guide you in creating visually compelling photos.
The workshop also covers photographing the museum’s galleries and exhibitions, which include American art, contemporary pieces, and artifacts from Asia, Africa, and ancient civilizations. Notably, you’ll have a chance to focus on the museum’s celebrated Tibetan art collection, one of the most significant in the Western Hemisphere, as well as works by renowned artists like Edward Hopper and Georgia O’Keeffe. You’ll learn how to integrate all the elements of a room—artworks, design details, and people—into a single cohesive image.
Tickets for the workshop are priced at $125. In case of bad weather or other unexpected situations, organizers will allow rescheduling or offer refunds. However, cancellations made without at least three days’ notice will require a $25 transfer fee.
