Paul’s Big Walk, now named after FreeWalkers’ founder Paul Kizcek, is back and ready to challenge participants with up to 50 miles of scenic walking. This is part of the Cross-Jersey Challenge, a series of walks designed to explore the beautiful trails of New Jersey and New York. Originally launched in 2010, this event has become a favorite for those seeking a unique outdoor adventure. Walkers can choose their own challenge level, with options for shorter distances.
Taking place on Saturday, May 17, 2025, the event will run from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM EDT. It starts at Metropark Station in Iselin, NJ, and follows the East Coast Greenway. The walk ends at NY Penn Station, but participants can choose to stop at optional endpoints along the way, including Rahway (4 miles), Elizabeth (24 miles), Newark Penn Station (28 miles), and Jersey City PATH (41 miles). The flexibility ensures everyone can find a distance that works for them.
Metropark Station, located at 3 Woodbridge Township, NJ 08830, serves as the starting point. Parking is available in the daily parking lot south of the station. The route is primarily paved and passes through neighborhoods, with some hills and roadway crossings to add variety. Walkers should check NJ Transit schedules to arrive on time, with trains from NY Penn Station departing at 5:10 AM. For the return, NJ Transit trains from NY Penn Station to Metropark are available.
This walk is categorized as expert-level due to its length and challenges, making it ideal for seasoned walkers. Participants will receive turn-by-turn directions but can move at their own pace, whether fast or slow, and can complete as much of the route as they choose. While there are rest stops for bathrooms and snacks, it’s recommended to bring essentials like water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for any weather conditions.
Starting bright and early at 6:00 AM, walkers will enjoy a 50-mile journey filled with highlights such as Merrill Park, Nomahegan Park, Rahway River Parkway, Liberty State Park, and stunning views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline from the Hudson River Greenway. Along the way, participants can experience the charm of neighborhoods and the beauty of urban and natural landscapes.
For those wanting to take on more of the Cross-Jersey Challenge, other events are happening this spring. These include the Spring Ahead Walk (14 miles) on March 22, the Great Canal Walk (28 or 40 miles) on April 5, the Kruimer Walk (13 miles) on April 26, and the Staten Island Marathon Walk (22 or 26 miles) on May 31. Together, these walks form part of the 100-mile goal to complete the East Coast Greenway across the state.
This event is supported by the East Coast Greenway Alliance, which is working to create a 3,000-mile trail from Canada to Key West, and the 9/11 National Memorial Trail, which connects key sites to honor the heroes of September 11, 2001. The FreeWalkers, who organize these events, aim to inspire fitness and community while promoting the trails and their rich history.
Whether you’re looking for a full-day challenge or a shorter walk, Paul’s Big Walk promises a rewarding and memorable experience for all who participate.
