If you’ve ever wanted to know more about the theremin, this event is for you. Dorit Chrysler will teach you how to play this unique instrument. She will walk you through the basics, showing you how to handle the theremin, explaining its technique, and offering tips on how to play. You’ll hear some of her own music, as well as examples of older pieces. There will also be time for you to try the theremin yourself, with guidance on how to position your hands and move through different exercises.
Dorit Chrysler is a well-known composer and artist based in New York and Berlin. She has been playing the theremin for many years and is also the co-founder of the NY Theremin Society. She has performed with major orchestras, including the San Francisco Symphony, and has had her work featured at places like the Guggenheim Museum and MoMA. She has also performed at big events like Coachella and Lincoln Center. Her work includes film and TV music, and her piece “Calder Plays Theremin” is sold at the MoMA store.
This workshop will be held on Friday, January 31, starting at 8:00 PM EST, with doors opening at 7:30 PM. It will take place at Monty Hall, located at 43 Montgomery Street in downtown Jersey City. The venue is close to the Exchange Place PATH station, making it easy to get there.
Tickets for the event are $35. All proceeds will go to support WFMU and the NY Theremin Society, helping to fund more projects related to the theremin and electronic music.
The theremin is one of the first electronic instruments, invented in 1920 by Russian scientist Lev Termen. It is played by moving your hands in the air near two metal antennas, which change the frequency and create sound. It doesn’t require touching the instrument, and it offers a unique sound unlike any other musical instrument.
This event is a great opportunity to learn more about the theremin, hear music from an expert, and try playing it yourself. Don’t miss out!
