Bayonne Fire Department’s Rapid Response
At 11:14 a.m. on July 9, 2024, the Bayonne Fire Department responded to a call about a structure fire at 120 West 44th St.
Fire Chief Keith Weaver reported that firefighters arrived quickly to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the two-story home.
The team quickly deployed multiple hand lines to tackle the blaze.
Despite the challenging high heat conditions, the firefighters controlled the fire by 11:43 a.m., less than 30 minutes after their arrival.
A second alarm was raised to ensure sufficient manpower and relief for the fatigued firefighters.
Quick Response Prevents Spread
The fire caused significant disruption, displacing 9 residents from the two-family building. The American Red Cross is currently providing support to these individuals.
Tragically, one resident sustained burns and was promptly transported to a local hospital by McCabe EMS. Additionally, a Bayonne firefighter suffered a minor injury and is receiving medical treatment.
Chief Weaver praised his team for their quick work, which stopped the fire from spreading to a nearby house just a few feet away.
The neighboring home only had minor exterior damage because of the firefighters’ fast response.

Chief Weaver praised the other fire departments for their help during the fire and the Bayonne Fire Canteen for supporting the firefighters on the scene.
An investigation into the fire’s cause is ongoing, but it seems to be an accident.
