Newark on list of possible sites for Amazon headquarters, Bayonne and JC left out

HUDSON COUNTY – Amazon, Inc. included Newark on a list of 20 “candidate cities” in consideration for its second headquarters, which it calls “HQ2.” Jersey City and Bayonne were left off the list, along with more than 216 other cities in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico that responded to Amazon’s request for proposals issued in September. In October, then NJ Gov. Christopher Christie recommended Newark in the state’s official incentive package of $7 billion. Other regional candidates include New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston.
Amazon has cities competing for the best incentive packages in hopes the retail giant’s return investment will pay off. A second headquarters would hire 50,000 employees at an average six-figure salary and build eight million square feet of office space, similar in size to its 33-building campus in Seattle.
Mayor Steven Fulop said in a Tweet, “Congrats to Newark and @rasjbaraka on making the final 20. While disappointed Jersey City isn’t here, I’m still happy for Newark and we are eager to contribute [in] any way we can to see Newark get over the goal line. It would be a positive for the entire region.”
