To the Editor:
In last week’s Letters to the Editor, Marie Russotto-Smith rightly paid tribute to the late City Council Member, Dorothy Harrington. Dot was the first woman elected to the Bayonne City Council, as the plaque on the wall of the Dorothy Harrington Council Chambers reminds us. She served as First Ward Council Member and then as Council Member At-Large. Last week’s letter suggested incorrectly that Dot Harrington also served as City Council President. Dot Harrington did not have that particular honor. However, she did serve as President of the Board of Education and as Chair of the Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authority.
Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski is indeed the first woman to serve as City Council President in Bayonne. The story about the recent International Women’s Day program at the library stated that fact correctly.
We should always remember the historic roles that women have played in Bayonne. There will be more historic firsts for women in Bayonne in the years ahead.
