Gregorio Pages was among three local mariners who work on the NY Waterway ferries to receive the Samuel Plimsoll Award for Outstanding Service following their rescue efforts on the Hudson River.

Pages, a deckhand and Weehawken resident, received the award for a rescue alongside deckhand Pietro Romano and Capt. David Dort. The latter are Jersey City residents. The 2018 Plimsoll Award was granted to the three following a rescue that took place on Nov. 3.

Pages also aided in the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ rescue

Disaster in the drink

Pages, Romano, and Dort were on the ferry Thomas H. Kean at 8:30 a.m. that morning when they witnessed a man jump from the edge of a seawall into the Hudson. According to reports, the three men had to subdue the victim after retrieving him from the water; it was later revealed that the victim had allegedly stolen a taxicab before jumping in.

Just over a year prior to this rescue, Pages took part in the rescue of another man who had fallen into the Hudson in July 2016.

According to reports, Pages and Dort had also aided in the rescue efforts during the 2009 incident in which US Airways Flight 1549 made an emergency landing on the river, famously known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.”
