A number of people have expressed their frustrations at – and objections to – “Parasite” walking away with four Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film). In my opinion, “Parasite” is a breath of fresh air. It is also a stern wake-up call – a slap in the face – for the American film industry.
Over the past few years, Hollywood has inundated us with mundane remakes and sequels, material that we’ve seen before. This suggests that Hollywood is either creatively bankrupt; or, perhaps, originality and artistry in the American motion picture industry have taken second place to box office proceeds.
It appears that Hollywood’s current operating strategy is simply to generate lackluster, canned films. Considering the classics that Hollywood has given us – quality films that we continue to enjoy to this very day – it is a shame that the industry is stuck on pumping out – and force feeding the viewing public with – unimaginative celluloid crap.
The American motion picture industry needs to rediscover its past. It needs a strong dose of innovation and originality.
