A new left-turn lane has been added to the busy intersection of Goldsborough Drive and 440 South, according to Bayonne Mayor James Davis.
Davis said he had been working with the state to rectify the issue for some time. After coordinating with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), a second left turn lane was added.
“I want to express my thanks to NJDOT for their commitment to our growing city,” Davis said. “After months of close coordination with my team, NJDOT has created two left-turn lanes from Goldsborough Drive onto Rt. 440 South.”
The intersection was known for traffic jams, sometimes blocking the entrance to Costco on Goldsborough Drive.
“This change will greatly improve traffic flow for people leaving the homes and shops on the Bayonne Peninsula,” Davis said.
Residents shared their thoughts on social media.
Many residents were relieved, with one resident uttering “Hallelujah!” Residents characterized the traffic on Goldsborough Drive at the intersection as a “nightmare” and “disaster” and said that the added lane was “definitely needed,” “it had to be done,” and was “about time.”
But some were not convinced the traffic would be alleviated. Others proposed further action on road infrastructure in the area, including making the light at the intersection last longer and adding another traffic light on Goldsborough Drive at the exits of Costco and CVS, among other suggestions.
