KC vs SF Super Bowl 58 Team Reviews:

Kansas City Chiefs (11-6 Regular Season, 3-0 Playoffs)

While the Chiefs have clearly been the dominant NFL franchise of the past six seasons, the 2023 roster had a few more holes than some of their past teams.

This season’s offensive decline might have proven to be fatal for KC if not for their defensive improvement.

The Chiefs were among the league leaders in points allowed (16.8) and QB pressure percentage (27.8%) this season, and while they didn’t create many turnovers, they’ve done a great job of getting the opposing offense off the field.

Because of their regular season struggles, Kansas City had to navigate a much tougher path to the championship this season, going on the road to defeat Super Bowl contenders in the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens.

In both games, the defense came up big against star QBs Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes wasn’t dominant, but he made big plays at crucial moments while Kelce turned back the clock and reminded people why he’s a future Hall of Famer.

Now, the Chiefs are one game away from becoming the first back-to-back NFL champions since the Patriots did it 20 years ago. And even though Mahomes won’t win the league MVP this year, it’s hard to find reasons to doubt him at this point.

San Francisco 49ers (12-5 Regular Season, 2-0 Playoffs)

The Niners came into the season as one of the favorites for the Super Bowl (9-1 NFL future odds at many books) and have looked the part for most of the year.

The 49ers boasted the NFL’s second-best offense in 2023 (398.4 YPG), led by RB Christian McCaffrey, who put up MVP-type numbers.

McCaffrey is a versatile weapon who can be moved around the field to hurt you in multiple ways, and the same can be said for pass catchers Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle  — these players can be great options if you’re into Super Bowl prop betting.

Safe to say, when the offense has all its weapons, it is nearly impossible to slow down.

Defensively, the Niners were once again amongst the NFL leaders in points allowed (18.4), but they haven’t been effective in pressuring quarterbacks (only getting pressure 21% of the time), even after adding DE Chase Young at the trade deadline.

The Detroit Lions made the 49ers defense look ordinary in the NFC Championship Game, and if not for a fumble and some questionable play-calling, Detroit could have dropped 40 points on San Francisco. A similar effort against Patrick Mahomes could be fatal for the 49ers.

Last year, the Niners were unlucky when Purdy was injured in the playoffs. This year, the 49ers have been the beneficiaries of several favorable bounces, and they will have to hope their good fortune continues against Kansas City.

NFL Super Bowl 58 Odds Movement

After opening up with the 49ers favored by 2.5 points, the early betting came in heavily on KC, moving the point spread a point or more at most sportsbooks.

After the initial flurry of bets on the underdog settled down, the San Francisco bets began to flow until the line returned to 49ers (-2), where it has remained steady. We expected more movement on the Friday or Saturday before kickoff, but the line has not budged. It’s clear Vegas is confident in the spread for this one.

Of course, there could still be some movement right before kickoff, as many big-time bettors and gambling syndicates wait until the last minute to find some value.

The over/under has been 47 or 47.5 from the start, with little movement thus far. Again, as more news rolls in closer to game time, there will likely be movement in the over/under.

As for the moneyline, it opened at -122 for San Francisco and +120 for the Chiefs. You can find lines at -120 for the Niners now, but for the most part, the consensus is San Francisco (-130) and Kansas City (+110).

Best Super Bowl LVIII Odds and Bets: Expert Picks

With the sheer volume of available bets for the Super Bowl, it is easy to get overwhelmed.

With that in mind, we’ve zeroed in on various Super Bowl betting tips and predictions that offer the best value.

Whether you like all our picks or not, we recommend finding a few wagers you feel strongly about rather than using the shotgun approach for your Super Bowl betting.

Game Pick: Chiefs +2 (-110) (Bovada)

I’m sorry, you are giving points to Patrick Mahomes? Yes, please.

If you like a more detailed analysis on your Super Bowl point spreads than that, consider this: in his three career games against the Niners, Mahomes has thrown for 341 YPG with 8 TDs and only 3 picks.

Two of those games came against the Shanahan Niners as well (one of which was the Super Bowl).

San Francisco hasn’t really faced that many elite QBs this season, and while they’ve humbled one or two (take a bow, Dak Prescott), players like Lamar Jackson, Matthew Stafford, and, yes, Jared Goff have done well against them.

And let’s not forget that one of the QBs in this one is making his Super Bowl debut while the other is gunning for Tom Brady.

We could very well be in for a vintage performance from this Niners defense, but they haven’t faced anyone as good as Mahomes, Kelce, and the rest of the Chiefs this season. When in doubt, take the points.

Total: Under 47.5 (-105) (Bovada)

We think the offenses will start out conservatively, avoiding turnovers while they probe the opposition. This makes the first half under (23) appealing as well.

More importantly, while the Niners defense gets all the hype, this Chiefs D is legit. The team hit the under 13 times this season, largely due to the fact that people assume Kansas City’s high-powered offense will be in a bunch of shootouts.

That simply hasn’t been the case this year.

As an added bonus, Bovada has reduced the juice on this pick, making it even more attractive than it was when the odds were released.

Brock Purdy OVER .5 Interceptions (-150) (Bovada)

Purdy has been known to float a pass or two when pressured, and the Chiefs can get to the quarterback as well as anyone.

And while Purdy has played in his share of important games since coming into the league, this is his first time in the Big Game.

Don’t be surprised if he’s a little nervous and tries to force the action early on.

This line has gotten less attractive as more bettors have jumped on it, and it’s fallen from -130 to -150. We still like it at those odds, but if it gets any shorter you might want to discard this tip.

Patrick Mahomes Under 4.5 carries (+115) (Bovada)

You can be sure Mahomes will pick a spot or two for an important scramble, but the Chiefs don’t call running plays for their QB, and five scrambles seems like a lot, especially with the 49ers rangy linebackers keeping watch.

We expect Mahomes to be conservative and pick his spots, so parlaying this with the under may not be a bad play.

Scoreless Quarter (+330) (BetOnline)

Both of these offenses are capable of stringing together a few 3 and outs in a row, which could cause a scoring drought.

Coaches Andy Reid and Kyle Shanahan are known for being innovators, but both have conservative streaks as well. Don’t be surprised if the first quarter is largely a field position battle.

Travis Kelce Super Bowl MVP (+1000) (BetWhale)

We don’t believe any of the “NFL script” conspiracies, but we can’t deny that this would be the storybook ending for Kelce.

It also makes sense if you watch how he has performed in the playoffs so far.

He’s been impossible to stop and the voters like to throw a non-QB the MVP every so often.

First Coach’s Challenge – Play Stands (+105) (Bovada)

Both of these coaches are about 50/50 on their challenges over their respective careers, with Chiefs coach Andy Reid hitting that mark exactly while Niners coach Kyle Shanahan clocks in at 56%.

You don’t need us to tell you that, when betting a 50/50 proposition, you should take the odds that pay out better than 50/50. This one seems like a no-brainer.

Tony Romo or Jim Nance to Mention Aliens (+375) (Bovada)

Allegiant Stadium, the site of Super Bowl 58, is often compared to a spaceship, so expect the conversation to veer in that direction whenever there’s an exterior shot during the broadcast.

That fact, coupled with the type of person one is likely to encounter in Vegas, makes an aliens joke a likely possibility.
