ROOKIE COP SHOT – The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an apparent police suicide on Sunday.

A 33-year-old rookie Jersey City police officer died from what officials suspect was a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sunday.
Jersey City police responded to a residence on Woodlawn Avenue at about 7:50 p.m. on a report of a police officer being shot. Police arriving on the scene reported that the wound appears to have been self-inflicted.
Medical officials on the scene reported that this was a gunshot wound to the chest and the victim was in traumatic arrest.
Police escorted the ambulance to Jersey City Medical Center where the officer was pronounced dead.
The incident, according to according to Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione, a spokeswoman for Jersey City’s Department of Public Safety, occurred while the officer was off duty.
She said the officer was employed on the midnight tour in the West District and has been on the force for about a year.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
