A funeral mass was offered Jan. 25 at St. Joseph of the Palisades Church, West New York, for Maria M. Abate, 95, of Kinderhook, N.Y., formerly of West New York and North Bergen. She passed away at her daughter’s house on Jan. 20. An Italian war bride, she met her husband James at a Red Cross Dance in Italy during the war. They married June 1, 1946 in Italy. She was a Democratic county committeewoman in West New York for over a decade. In the early 1970s she worked as an interpreter at the West New York Police Community Relations Bureau mini-precinct, under Capt. Richard Warnock, retiring in the 1990s. Her work primarily encompassed helping the Hispanic community navigate immigration problems, citizenship, and informing the residents of West New York the services available. She was the wife of the late James J. Abate; mother of Janice Abate and her husband James Nadel and James Abate and his wife Pat; sister of Carmela Gabriele, Margherita Maldari, Vittorio Mossa, all of Italy, and the late Josephine Cerini, Lilana Albanese and Giovanni Mossa.
